Demand is growing while supply is depleting...
Earth's oceans sustain us. In addition to their value as a source of food, jobs and income, they play a central role in the functioning of the Earth's ecosystems. Without healthy oceans, life would not be possible. For most of human history, the sea supported an astonishing and diverse array of life…
While it may seem that there are plenty of fish in the sea, it's a different story just below the surface. Overfishing, lack of effective management and our own consumption habits are just a few factors contributing to a decline in wild fish.
Because the oceans seem so vast and their resources limitless, these threats are often "out of sight, out of mind" But overfishing issues are not just for future generations to endure; they're very real problems threatening our current seafood supply and the health of our oceans. “world’s fish and seafood demand has increased five-fold in the last 50 years. One billion people now rely on fish and seafood for their sole or main source of protein” –SEAFISH-
What will the coming decades bring?
As the global standard of living increases and human population grows, demand for seafood will only grow. To meet future demand while maintaining or restoring natural ecosystems, wild-caught seafood production must become more sustainable.
Maldives is one of the few places in the world where sustainable fishing is practiced. The government is highly concerned on implementing long-term management plans designed to ensure the sustainable management, recovery and rebuilding of fish stocks and marine ecosystems. This in turn has led to establish our reputation with global buyers especially from Europe and USA.
